Well, here we are, yet another blogging platform I've had to clamber on. All thanks to another fantastic platform falling foul of lack of investors. Jux for all its worth has been the latest victim, Posterous is another fallen comrade and I can't bring myself to utter the words of previous platforms now nothing more than a name of a url which gets redirected to a bigger company which swallowed it whole.

I guess this is the cost of being curious of new platforms and being one of the early adopters. I always thought Jux would have been different though, it strayed from the very linear (e.g this page) look commonly associated with blogs and flipped it on its head, with a massive focus on media. Now this wasn't supposed to be up against flickr etc it still held on to the fact is was a blogging platform but it made it such a nicer place to be, people write blogs and people have to be on those pages while they read them, so why not make it a pleasant experience?

There were no obtuse menus or things flashing at you, just a space for your words and a space for a vibrant or thought provoking image to accompany it. Running through someones articles was a journey, you could tell the image that was chosen for the article had something behind it, time was spent getting it right and making sure it had a deeper meaning. Kinda miss that.

This is my blogs home now, it's all connected to my Google bits so I guess that's something, it just feels like, well, like everyone elses blog.

So, the rationale for building this system came from a need for our institution to be able to issue Open Badges , an initiative backed by the Mozilla foundation for standardising the issuing of badges for 'verifying learning'. All the systems that allow you to issue badges to users are all tied in to big and bulky VLEs such as BlackBoard. So what happens when it's a face to face session? How can we issue a badge to a user when they aren't in the ecosphere of the VLE or institution for that matter? We didn't want to have to worry about usernames, registrations, training on another system etc So I had a scout around to see what was about. The Möbius strip of feedback.

I was advised as a starter to read David Nicol and Debra MacFarlane-Dick's (2004) 'Rethinking Formative Assessment in HE: a theoretical model and seven principles of good feedback practice'. This wasn't a massive read but had some very pertinent points about how the general thrust of how feedback should be thought about and articulated. I think one of the points I picked up more quickly than the others due to the work I've done on being a reflective learner was Nicol and MacFarlane-Dick's first principle, 1. Facilitates the development of self-assessment (reflection) in learning. Positive feedback on Elevate's student inductions

Reith Lectures -  http://flic.kr/p/6q5y8N I did post this on the Elevate Blog, however I felt it needed to be here as well :) The latest intake of students at UCS were graced with the Elevate Team's presence during the student inductions, to not only go over our current institution services such as the VLE and the E-portfolio system but to empower students to look at personal learning networks and other Web 2 tools outside of UCS. Demonstrating the benefits of such tools as twitter, diigo etc This has changed greatly from our old student induction approach which was very point and click orientated mainly focusing around the VLE.
