Diigo - Evaluating the iPad for education

Just bookmarked an article from Campus Technology (.com) titled Evaluating the iPad for Education. An interesting read to say the least, and I certainly would be interested in seeing the results of the testing, primarily to see at what angle they have approached their rigorous testing.

I say this purely because this area of accessing education in new ways is growing at a rapid rate and there seems to be a lot of chatter about how students access their learning content or how they communicate using a multitude of these devices. However, shouldn't we be looking more at how we can morph the current learning materials to better enhance the learning using these devices rather than just using the devices as replacements for notebooks or simply sitting down for a chat with the lecturer? What will be the main driver in five years time? 

Will it be the lecturer pushing the content? or will it be the students expectation to be able to access content which takes full advantage of these powerful devices? A colleague Aaron Burrell (@iaaronburrell) has a project lined up What does the iPad offer as a learning technology? If anything interesting crops up.. there will be posts! Sent from my iPad.. ;)

Threshold Concepts, Jared and Aperture Science Laboratories.

I haven't posted in a while, my partner and I had a baby, called Jared :) However I'll keep my baby talk to personal networks, in this post I'd like to reflect on a recent session I had with a course I'm undertaking at my institution. The course is PgC in Academic Practice and this weeks session was around 'Designing for Learning' specifically looking at 'Threshold Concepts'. The term was coined in 2003 with the following definition: “A threshold concept can be considered as akin to a portal, opening up a new and previously inaccessible way of thinking about something. It represents a transformed way of understanding, or interpreting, or viewing something without which the learner cannot progress. As a consequence of comprehending a threshold concept there may thus be a transformed internal view of subject matter, subject landscape, or even world view. Mahara Upgrade Complete - How did it go?

Marc Thiele -  http://flic.kr/p/7aTDRK Well today saw me up early putting our Mahara e-Portfolio Service into maintenance mode so users couldn't login during the upgrade, 00:03 to be precise. The upgrade went well, I monitored the site from 7:30 and the site was fully working by 8:50am. Several double espressos later and I'm pleased to say all went well apart from a couple of issues I'll report on in my project documentation, one being the hosting solution put back our upgrade day very close to the initial deadline! I'll add this as an additional risk in any future project planning with Mahara and plan accordingly. One slight niggle I had was when I came in this morning to upgrade, it was in full swing open to the world, my early morning switching of the maintenance mode was in vain.
