Diigo - A couple of links

Image
Forest Wander -  http://flic.kr/p/avDP2c A small journey took place yesterday.. I normally check out Campus Technology on a regular basis, just to see what's floating around the state side of learning technology. US universities are massive in comparison to our local network ones so it's nice to see what emerging technologies are being used in well funded unis straight from the ole valley of silicon, to give maybe an insight as to what's to come or to keep a watchful eye out for. I did however want to find a nice UK based LT news site, after some random googling I came across the JISC CETIS Assistant Director's work blog, within a few minutes I had Diigo'd a couple of links. What technologies have been used to transform curriculum delivery? - I found this a particularly easy read, I didn't have to read through pages and pages of overhyped buzzwords to find out what the point of the article was. The use of IBM's ManyEyes widgets to display the data

Moving to Google Chrome

Sean MacEntee -  http://flic.kr/p/83gtho Well, after using Google Chrome to access all of our work documents on GoogleDocs, I've decided to haul all of the stuff I used FireFox for over. Managed to find the Web Developer and Firebug extensions for Chrome plus a couple of other handy ones which I'm sure I'll blog about later. So far so good, it's quick.. expose seems to run smoother on the mac having many screens open (I'm not a tab fan!!), although I'm not sure what that means from a performance perspective, maybe Chrome has a smaller footprint than FireFox. I simply haven't had a chance to open a terminal window and type the words 'top'.. well I have had a chance, just didn't do it.  Not quite sure what to make of this 'Home' area, I would like to have some options to customise this such as having the ability to have quick bookmark references, now I know you have the quick bar at the top.. but I want fancy screencaps of

Positive feedback on Elevate's student inductions

Image
Reith Lectures -  http://flic.kr/p/6q5y8N I did post this on the Elevate Blog, however I felt it needed to be here as well :) The latest intake of students at UCS were graced with the Elevate Team's presence during the student inductions, to not only go over our current institution services such as the VLE and the E-portfolio system but to empower students to look at personal learning networks and other Web 2 tools outside of UCS. Demonstrating the benefits of such tools as twitter, diigo etc This has changed greatly from our old student induction approach which was very point and click orientated mainly focusing around the VLE. It seems as though our new approach has certainly guided some students into trying some of the tools we suggested, below is a comment from a student who decided to have a play with twitter.  "Further to our conversation earlier today, I write to continue my eulogising about Twitter as a resource which has helped me immensely with my pos

Diigo - Evaluating the iPad for education

Image
Sean MacEntee -  http://flic.kr/p/bC9SiJ Just bookmarked an article from Campus Technology (.com) titled Evaluating the iPad for Education. An interesting read to say the least, and I certainly would be interested in seeing the results of the testing, primarily to see at what angle they have approached their rigorous testing. I say this purely because this area of accessing education in new ways is growing at a rapid rate and there seems to be a lot of chatter about how students access their learning content or how they communicate using a multitude of these devices. However, shouldn't we be looking more at how we can morph the current learning materials to better enhance the learning using these devices rather than just using the devices as replacements for notebooks or simply sitting down for a chat with the lecturer? What will be the main driver in five years time?  Will it be the lecturer pushing the content? or will it be the students expectation to be able t
